Can’t see USB drives unless IOS is jailbroken

I was mislead by YouTube claims that you can use this to transfer files between IOS device and an external USB drive (thumb, portable, etc.). Apparently you can but only on IOS devices that were jailbroken. That solution is too risky for me. On a stock iPad it gives you a little functionality but iTunes hard-connection and apps I already had do as much or more. Looking at wireless wifi connection devices like D-Link SharePort Go Mobile instead.
